About Conference:

Socio-economic conditions and political representation are important indicators to measure the development level of any community. India has made rapid strides in various fields after the implementation of Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization (LPG). However, this development has not raised the status of minorities in India, especially the Muslims. The Gopal Singh Committee Report 1983, the Sachar Report 2006 and lastly, the Ranganath Report 2007 manifest the other side of the story against the Indian government claim that the Muslims are progressing and prospering alike other communities.

Muslims constituted the largest religious minority community with 14 per cent population of this country as per the 2001 Census. Nonetheless, discrimination, social stagnation and educational marginalization have cumulatively resulted in the growing economic backwardness of the Muslims in the country. Muslims have remained largely unaffected by the process of economic development and social change that have been taking place in independent India. Their general socio- economic conditions have been deteriorating progressively.

Political representation is an important socio-economic indicator to measure the political status of a community. It is another indicator of a community s empowerment. The Muslim community is inadequately or simply under-represented in general legislatures and even in the LokSabha.

In the light of these factors, a National Conference has been planned by the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. The focus of the conference is to initiate the debate on issues related to socio-economic and
political status of Muslims in India. It would go a step forward to come up with the policy initiatives to bring this excluded group to the mainstream society. In addition, the issues and debates raised in the conference would help the State policy makers, to understand the issues of the community and formulate developmental plans for their upliftment.
